News from Issaquah PTSA Council
We continue to watch the work of the High School Graduation Requirements committee as they review new state requirements and our high school principals continue the task of identifying the optimum high school day and more clearly defining the high school experience. Work will also continue this fall in collaboration with PTSA on examining the middle school experience. This past year we worked with District administrators to put together a survey for teachers, parents and students. In the coming fall the results of this survey, other data, research and discussion of focus groups will all come together to give direction to future MS plans.
As this article is written several representatives from Issaquah High PTSA are representing Washington State at the National PTA Convention in San Diego. This honor was the result of being recognized as the 2008 Outstanding Local Unit of the Year. The entire Council shares in the excitement of this honor and we are particularly proud that it was a high school PTSA recognized for its great work to support our schools and families. We are continually reminded that parents are a key part of their teen’s educational experience and close partnerships with middle and high schools are important. PTSA membership, programs and events at the secondary level provide that partnership.
We will continue to support each PTSA as they strive for 100% membership and work on “Best Practices”. This past year 20 of our 21 local units received Standards of Excellence awards following best practices in setting goals, communicating, serving members, training leaders, fiscal responsibility and volunteer recognition.
The Council board will hold a planning retreat in August, this year with Superintendent Rasmussen and other District administrators joining us to clearly align our goals with those of our District. This school year promises to be full, challenging and rewarding for all of our PTSA leaders in Issaquah. We look forward to greeting everyone at the Region 2 August Training Conference and at our September Council meeting as we launch our 2008-2009 theme and goals.
