News from Lake Washington PTSA Council
The Lake Washington School District, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Chip Kimball, is looking to the future with “Vision 2020.” Through this series of informationgathering sessions, feedback from students, parents, business and staff will be used to guide curriculum decisions so that students will not only meet the mandated graduation requirements, but will graduate with the necessary skills to be successful in a rapidly changing, highly technological world. This forward-thinking typifies the work of our administration and school board and is largely responsible for the continuing excellence of our schools in spite of the state’s funding system that places LWSD at a disadvantage when compared to our neighboring districts.
Lake Washington Council welcomed its 40th PTA this past spring with the charter of Rachel Carson Elementary PTSA in Sammamish. This energetic group is well on its way with plans for a full agenda of activities beginning with the opening of the new school this fall.
Also new this coming year will be our redesigned web site. With our old site difficult to manage and experiencing increasing compatibility problems, the decision was made to find a new format that would be more user-friendly and simplify updates. Our goal is to create a more flexible tool that will be a true resource for our member units. With the new site removed from the district’s server, we will also have more options for posting advocacy information.
This past spring, at our annual Presidents & Principals Workshop, PTA leaders and building principals began conversations as learning communities (high school feeder patterns) to identify common interests and concerns. Additional opportunities to meet in LC groups will be offered by council. By encouraging community awareness, we seek to foster connections between units and with council, leading to more shared ideas and activities and bringing local units beyond the walls of their schools as participants in the larger community.
LW Council will continue to emphasize the importance of training for the success of a PTA, believing leaders have a responsibility to acquire the essential knowledge that will keep their units on track. Our team of council leaders remains available to support every unit, from answering routine questions to providing individual assistance or training as needed. Through our web site, newsletter and other avenues, we strive to make communication and connections a priority.
Our advocacy team is poised to track the work of the Basic Education Task Force and keep everyone informed throughout the process. The first step is promoting the LWSD School Board’s evening with Rep. Ross Hunter and others who will present the work of the task force to date. The event is:

Open to the public
As we reflect on the past year and anticipate the next, it is imperative to recognize the local unit leaders and volunteers who continue their amazing accomplishments.
From outreach and scholarships to enrichment, support and facility enhancements, thousands of hours are given by LW volunteers as well as the almost $750,000 donated to the district in 07-08 for numerous projects, support and activities. Council applauds every unit and volunteer for the work they do every day to make a difference in the lives of children.
